Free Crochet Pattern

Chubby Penguin

Last year a friend was studying abroad, so when I visited her I decided to make her a travel companion ????

    What you need

    • 3.5 mm crochet hook (body)
    • 1.5 mm crochet hook (beak, paws, wings)
    • 1 sewing needle
    • A pair of safety eyes 7.5 mm
    • Front: White yarn (50g)
    • Body: Black or coloured yarn (50g)
    • Beak and paws: Orange or yellow yarn (50g)

    Instructions

    Stitches

    • ch: chain
    • dc: double crochet
    • htc: half treble crochet
    • tr: treble crochet
    • dtr: double treble crochet
    • inc: increase (2 single crochets in one loop)
    • dc2tog: decrease (pull yarn through loop, pull yarn through second loop, yarn over and pull through all loops)

    Body

    Start with white yarn.

    Rnd 1: ch 15 - 15 st.
    Rnd 2: insert hook into previous st and dc, htc in next st, tr in next st, dtr in next st, tr in next st, htc in next st, dc in next 2 st, htc in next st, tr in next st, dtr in next st, tr in next st, htc in next st, dc in next st. At the end, ch 2. - 14 st.
    Rnd 3: dc in each st, ch 1 and turn at the end of the stitch row. - 14 st.
    Rnd 4: dc in each st, turn at the end of the stitch row (without adding the ch) and insert hook into next st. - 14 st.
    Rnd 5: dc in each 11 st, dc2tog, ch 1 and turn at the end of the stitch row. - 12 st.
    Rnd 6: dc in each st, (without adding the ch) and insert hook into next st. - 12 st.
    Rnd 7: dc in each 9 st, dc2tog, ch 1 and turn at the end of the stitch row. - 10 st.
    Rnd 8: dc in each st, (without adding the ch) and insert hook into next st. - 10 st.
    Rnd 9: dc in each 7 st, dc2tog, ch 1 and turn at the end of the stitch row. - 8 st.
    Rnd 10: dc in each st, ch 1 and turn at the end of the stitch row. - 8 st.
    Rnd 11-18: (8 rounds) dc in each st, ch 1 and turn at the end of the stitch row. - 8 st.
    Rnd 19: dc in each st around the shape. - 52 st.

    Change to black/coloured yarn.

    Rnd 20: dc in next 20 st, htc in next st, tr in next 2 st, htc in next st, dc in next 28 st  - 52 st.
    Rnd 21-28: (8 rounds) dc in each st round. - 52 st.

    Fit eyes between rounds 4 and 5.

    Rnd 29: [dc in next 11 st, dc2tog] 6 times - 48 st.
    Rnd 30: [dc in next 6 st, dc2tog] 6 times - 42 st.
    Rnd 31: [dc in next 5 st, dc2tog] 6 times - 36 st.
    Rnd 32: [dc in next 4 st, dc2tog] 6 times - 30 st.
    Rnd 33: [dc in next 3 st, dc2tog] 6 times - 24 st.
    Rnd 34: [dc in next 2 st, dc2tog] 6 times - 18 st.

    Stuff body.

    Rnd 35: [dc in next st, dc2tog] 6 times - 12 st.
    Rnd 36: [dc2tog] 6 times - 6 st.
    Rnd 37: [dc2tog] 3 times and fasten off - 0 st.

    Wings (make 2)

    Using black/coloured yarn. 

    Rnd 1: ch 9, dc in previous st, htc in next st, tr in next st, dtr in next 2 st, tr in next st, htc in next st, dc in next st. Fasten off and sew to the body.

    Beak

    Using orange/yellow yarn. 

    Rnd 1: ch 3, htc in previous st, tr in next st. Fasten off and sew to the body.

    Paws (make 2)

    Using orange/yellow yarn. 

    Rnd 1: ch 5, 2 htc in next st, ch 1, dtr in next 2 st, ch 1, 2 htc in next st. Fasten off and sew to the body.
